Tortilla

Tortilla...

The thinnest cornmeal tortilla called tortilla or tortilla refers to the national dishes of countries such as Mexico, Canada and the United States. True, there are other meanings of the word tortilla. For example, in Spain, tortilla is an omelette in which, in addition to eggs and greens, potatoes, tomatoes and peppers are added.

The appearance of the Mexican tortilla surprisingly reminds everyone of the well-known pita bread, which, in principle, is not surprising, since the production process of these tortillas is essentially the same. The only difference lies in the ingredients that are provided by the formulation of tortilla or pita.

Mexican bread from corn or wheat flour received its famous name thanks to the Spanish conquistador, who began colonizing the lands of Central America back in the 16th century. The Aztecs called tlaxcalli corn tortillas, and the Spaniards changed the name to their own manner and turned out to be tortilla or "round tortilla. " The new Spanish name tortilla has stuck to the present day.

Remarkably, the Spanish national dish tortilla is an omelette of a necessarily round shape, apparently due to the external similarity of the two products, conquistadors called tortilla corn cakes. Savvy Mexicans went further and decided to combine two national dishes into one. Now they love huevos rancheros for breakfast in Mexico.

This dish consists of two tortillas. Spanish egg omelette is wrapped in a Mexican tortilla corn tortilla, adding tomatoes and pepper. In order to cook Mexican tortilla, you will need such "simple" products as: half a glass of water, margarine (50 grams), corn flour (300 grams), baking powder for dough or soda, as well as salt to taste.

You need to mix all the components in one dish and move carefully. Then divide the dough into equal parts and roll them into small balls. Usually chefs try to make a ball the size of a small chicken egg. Then you need to roll out each ball with a rolling pin and sprinkle flour on both sides. At the final stage, you should fry the tortillas in a pan without oil, until the tortillas show up with distinctive bubbles.

The calorie content of the tortilla is 286 Kcal in 100 grams of corn cake. Which is comparatively not a lot, given that tortillas is Mexican bread. Nutritionists often use tortillas in carbohydrate diets, since the product contains more than 40% carbohydrates.

It is believed that the chemical composition of the product retains most of the beneficial elements and vitamins that corn or wheat flour initially contains. This, combined with a low calorie level, makes this product an excellent replacement for bakery products. Tortilla retains its taste and consumer qualities for a long time, it is enough only to store the product in the refrigerator. Based on tortilla, famous Mexican dishes such as burito or tacos are made.
