In general, a gingerbread house is called a confection, which is made on the basis of a special gingerbread dough. Such dough includes a mixture of rye flour and natural honey, egg yolks and milk. Flavoring additives are often used - as a rule, these are crushed spices rich in essential oils: cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, badyan, allspice, nutmeg, lemon anise zest, vanilla and ginger. It is worth noting that the desired components of gingerbread house dough are white and black pastry molasses or burnt sugar.

The gingerbread house consists of several pre-baked cakes (roof and four walls). Produced raw cakes are lubricated with egg, baked and cooled, after which a gingerbread house is assembled from these parts, which are fastened together with toothpicks or matches. Outside, the joints between gingerbread cakes are covered with chocolate or sugar glaze.

Often, the gingerbread house is decorated with a variety of decorative elements, as which figures of animals, flowers, trees, hearts and much more can be used. In addition, a special painting made of cream can decorate a gingerbread house. By the way, most of the elements of the gingerbread house (including jewelry) are made from gingerbread dough and covered with glaze in all kinds of shades.

It is noteworthy that there are many varieties of gingerbread houses, and these can be both ordinary small and entire palaces or even mansions. Using gingerbread dough, reduced copies of world-famous structures are often made: for example, the Empire State Building in New York and Big Ben in London.
