Pepin apples

Pepin apples...

Pepin apples are the fruits of a winter breeding tree by I. V. Michurin, which was first obtained from crossing the Pepinka Lithuanian hybrid with Ranet Orléans. Today, the Pepin apple variety is considered one of the most common in the Russian Federation and the countries of the former CIS.

In general, two varieties of Pepin Apples stand out: Pepin saffron and Pepin London. Both are late winter apple varieties, which are considered the best winter varieties characteristic of the middle strip of the post-Soviet space. In addition, these varieties are quite widespread in Belarus.

The late autumn apple variety Pepin London is more characteristic of the southern territories of Russia. By the way, a little earlier it was also mistakenly called Calville royal, but it is worth noting that these are different varieties of apples, even despite their external similarity.

Trees of the Pepin saffron variety are distinguished by fertility and high yields. It is noteworthy that the first fruiting in apple trees begins in the fifth or sixth year of growth. Under the most favorable conditions, trees are able to enter fruiting even for 4 years, and at the age of twelve they produce up to 200 kilograms of fruits.

The apple tree of the Pepin variety is distinguished by its average size, at a young age it is dense and rather rounded in the shape of the crown, and in the fruiting - widely rounded with drooping branches. As a rule, the crop is formed on growth shoots (spear and fruit rods).

Pepin apples can be either medium-sized or small enough. They are distinguished by a symmetrical round-conical shape with extremely weak ribbing. The surface of Pepin apples is smooth, while the main color of mature fruits is considered greenish-yellow. The cover is represented by a blurred dark red blush, on which darker strokes and stripes are clearly visible, as well as an abundance of small subcutaneous dots of white color.

The cream flesh of apples is dense and juicy. It has a good wine-sweet taste with a subtle spicy aroma. Basically, mature fruits of this variety are usually consumed fresh, but at the same time they are good in compotes and jam - in the process of harvesting they practically do not boil.

Pepin apples reach detachable maturity by the first decade of September. Due to the fact that the fruits mature at the same time, the fruit is eaten in one stage. Large fruits of the Pepin variety are able to maintain their commercial and taste qualities until December, and smaller apples until January. The best period of consumption of Pepin apples is considered the time of the second decade of September - the second decade of November.
