Among the numerous hybrids, the yellow watermelon, not quite familiar to our country, deserves special attention. This fruit in appearance is practically no different from the usual watermelon in the red middle, but when cut it opens the flesh before the gaze not of red color, but of bright yellow.

In addition, a distinctive feature of yellow watermelon can be called a significantly lower number of bones compared to a regular fruit. By the way, the calorie content of a yellow watermelon averages about 38 kcal, which is slightly more than the nutritional value of its red brother.

A new species of watermelon has seen the light by crossing a wild yellow watermelon with a common watermelon. Interestingly, it is impossible to eat wild yellow watermelon, which is why, thanks to the works of breeders, a yellow watermelon appeared, suitable for food. It tastes like a red watermelon, however, it is not so sweet.

Today, yellow watermelons are cultivated in countries such as Spain and Thailand. Moreover, the Spaniards grow this plant, the fruits of which are round in the summer, while the inhabitants of Thailand harvest oval-shaped yellow watermelons in winter.

Yellow watermelon is especially respected in Thailand - in this country, yellow is believed to attract money. However, yellow watermelons are also popular with Chinese people buying fruits in Thailand. For the population of China, yellow also means wealth, but it seems that yellow watermelon does not gift the Chinese at all, but the Thais who sell it. By the way, in Thailand, yellow watermelons are called Tang-Mo.

Breeders of Russia also tried to grow yellow watermelons on the territory of our country - namely in Astrakhan. So at the All-Russian Research Institute, the head of the department for the selection of melons - Sergei Sokolov - took a decade to breed a new variety of watermelon - yellow. Moreover, which is gratifying, he succeeded.

The new yellow watermelon variety was named "Lunar. " True, it is worth noting that compared to foreign varieties, Russian turned out to be very sweet and is characterized by a rather specific taste. Disputes do not subside on this occasion: the taste and aroma properties of this variety of yellow watermelon are a mixture of taste shades of mango, pumpkin and lemon.
