The German word wermut or "wormwood" became the name of the famous fortified wine vermutf not by chance. The taste of this alcoholic drink is surprisingly reminiscent of the tart and slightly bitter taste of wormwood. Vermouth is used not only as an independent alcoholic drink, but also as an ingredient in cocktails. Humanity also knows the therapeutic properties of vermouth.

According to some reports, the vermouth recipe was invented in the 4th century BC by the famous ancient Greek luminary of medicine Hippocrates. The first major industrial production of the alcoholic drink vermouth was founded by the Turin Antonio Carpano in the 18th century.

Composition of vermouth

Initially, white wine served as the basis for the composition of vermouth, to which various herbs and even spices were added, hence the distinctive caramel brown color of the drink. Nowadays, vermouth is produced from various grape varieties (white, green, red, pink), so in the store you can see vermouth of various colors, composition, smell and taste.

The classical composition of vermouth involves the use of such components as: wormwood essence, yarrow, cardamom, mint, nutmeg or elderberry and many others. Vermouth can contain up to fifty different herbal supplements and extracts. The variety of vermouth taste palette is achieved precisely by combining various types of wormwood with other herbs, lemon zest, juniper, balm or St. John's wort.

Such a variety of herbs infused with wine determine many beneficial properties of vermouth. Vermouth in ancient Greece was used as a disinfectant. Wine vermouth from the "drink of the Gods" has passed into the category of indispensable medicines. Vermouth contributes to the normalization of the digestive system and helps to increase appetite. Also known are the generally strengthening therapeutic properties of vermouth and all thanks to the herbal composition of the drink.

Vermouth Secco or vermouth dry is a drink whose sugar content should not exceed 4%, hence the dry and slightly cloying taste of vermouth.

Vermouth Bianco is a well-known vermouth made on the basis of white wine and refers to moderately sweet drinks, since its sugar content does not exceed 15%.

Vermouth Rosso is a sweet kind of vermouth that is distinguished by its rich red color and contains more than 15% sugar in its composition.

Vermouth Rose is a pleasant pink drink with the softest taste and aroma.

Vermouth Bitter - This type of vermouth refers to herbal herbal beverage bitters, which are consumed in the prevention and treatment of diseases of the digestive system.



By the way, the famous Martini treats vermouth as well. Among the famous brands of vermouth can be distinguished - Italian Gancia, Gran Torino, Chinzano and Distillerie Stock, Spanish vermouth Salvatore and French - Noilly Prat.
